Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Booking flights and accommodation separately could be a risky move, it has been claimed.

According to Abta – The Travel Association, those who arrange their holidays in this way could find themselves in trouble if their provider goes bust.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the organisation, said consumers should ask at the time of booking whether their holiday is considered to be a package and if they will be offered protection.

"It should be very clear to you, the wording should be very clear in the terms and conditions and it's just about looking and checking and then considering [whether you want] to be financially protected," she explained.

For those who are not sure if they will be protected, Abta recommends making the booking using a credit card.

The warning comes after the recent collapse of Freedom Direct Holidays, which is thought to have affected almost 9,000 bookings.
