SuperStar Libra arrived in the Indian port after completing a ten-day relocation cruise from Singapore, with over 400 passengers on board.
Cruising from India could be a unique way to experience south-east Asia. On its journey to Mumbai, SuperStar Libra took in Chennai, Colombo in Sri Lanka, Phuket in Thailand and Port Klang in Malaysia. With the hop-on hop-off allowances, a cruise may be the new (and slightly more upmarket) backpacker bus trip.
The cruise ship offers swimming pools, gym and casino. Cruising in Indian waters is also good news for vegetarians: the ship's meals cater for both vegetarians and Jains.
Tourism and media officials, who met the cruise liner with aplomb in Mumbai, greeting its arrival by with a lighting of lamps ceremony and Hindu blessing, are hoping the new cruise route will bring a different sort of tourism to India, both for local and international travellers alike.
"Vacationers from India rank in the top three of our passenger mix and the arrival of SuperStar Libra in India is part of the ongoing expansion to cater to the growing demand for cruise holidays in the region," explained Mr Chong Chee-Tut, Star Cruises chief operating officer.
SuperStar Libra will now be based in Mumbai and will offer cruises to Indian destinations Goa, Lakshadweep and Kochi from October 2nd to April 2006. Special holiday cruises are also available on Christmas Day.
