Taking out critical illness insurance is vital, one industry expert has suggested.

According to David Thomson, chief executive of bestdealinsurance.co.uk, the product can make a "huge difference" for those diagnosed with a long-term illness who are concerned about how they will manage their finances.

He said: "It gives you choices rather than life insurance which is designed to look after someone who is left behind after you are gone.

"Critical illness cover ensures that you don't get left behind."

Mr Thomson added that those looking to take out the insurance product should read their policy to make sure they are getting the right level of protection and are aware of any exclusions.

He also advised consumers to be honest about their health when applying - Mr Thomson pointed to a study by Which? indicating that about one in five critical illness claims are refused as existing medical conditions were not disclosed.

Earlier this month, a study by Macmillan Cancer Support revealed that 40 per cent of holidaymakers who have successfully been treated for cancer have received increased travel insurance costs or been refused cover altogether.
