Holidaymakers are said to be shunning city breaks as the credit crunch tightens its grip.
Bob Atkinson, a holiday expert from travelsupermaket.com, suggested that the rising cost of fuel had made city breaks a less attractive option than before.
However, he maintains that Britons are still taking their "main holiday" despite the current economic climate.
"They work hard and they want to get away and relax. With the credit crunch and all the news about prices going up et cetera, there's also an element of wanting to get away from that," he explained.
A recent survey by Kayak.co.uk revealed that 90 per cent of Britons consider holidays as an important factor when it comes to their "overall happiness".
The poll revealed that 98 per cent of people would forgo day-to-day luxuries such as magazines and eating out in order to pay for their annual break in the sun.
