Paris, often thought of as the most romantic city in the world, has been named the argument capital of the globe.

According to research from Teletext Holidays, the city tops the list of holiday destinations in which usually considerate couples come to blows.

In a study of 2,000 people, 34 per cent of travellers taking short-breaks Paris to admitted to arguing while on holiday.

"The key to a successful romantic trip is preparation - spend time online researching your trip before you go away and speak to friends and colleagues about their experiences to ensure that you make the best of your destination," Matt Cheevers, managing director of Teletext Holidays commented.

Service without a smile was also on the menu for would-be lovers in Paris, with one in ten complaining of "rude and surly service" in a restaurant which affected the romantic atmosphere.

Other top cities for discord were named as Marrakech and Amsterdam.
