'Consumers warned to check critical insurance policies'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Consumers are being advised to ensure they fully disclose their medical history when applying for critical insurance cover, an industry expert suggests.

According to BestDealInsurance, some 25 per cent of claims are rejected as people fail to disclose information about medical conditions and do not read the small print of their policies.

Chief executive David Thomson said: "Anyone taking out critical illness cover should not only fully disclose any previous or current medical conditions - however irrelevant they may seem - but they also need to ensure that they read the small print carefully and fully understand what the cover offers."

He added that insurance providers should ensure they get a comprehensive policy as some providers offer "little more than blank pieces of paper".

Last month, various insurance firms, including those providing travel insurance cover, were warned by the Financial Services Authority to stop misleading consumers through their advertisements.

However travel insurance advertisements were found to be of a higher standard than their counterparts.
