Comprehensive motor insurance recommended

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Taking out an adequate car insurance policy has been advised by an industry expert.

American Express marketing manager Joanne Field points out that with one in 20 vehicles on the road lacking cover, uninsured drivers are adding between £25 and £30 to the cost of insured motorists' annual premiums.

A study by the insurer revealed that respondents would like to increase police patrols and introduce more severe penalties for those motorists who do not have insurance, a licence or are untaxed.

She said: "The uninsured driver poses a risk to every insured driver - not only is there the extra premium cost, but there is the risk of being involved in an accident with them."

However, she claimed that although "fully comprehensive insurance" should help meet the cost of repairing a car, motorists could find they have lost their no claims discount with medical expenses also not being covered.

Meanwhile, drivers looking to take their car abroad on holiday were advised to take out sufficient cover for their vehicle in addition to an adequate travel insurance policy.

Earlier this year American Express warned that about one in ten British motorists suffer a vehicle breakdown while away.
