Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Over a quarter of tourists claimed that their choice of holiday destination is influenced by celebrities and popular culture, a new study indicates.

According to research conducted by Opodo, 45 per cent of respondents were reported to be inclined to visit Thailand as the south-east Asian country was the location of backpacking film The Beach.

Meanwhile, one in four wished to travel to New Zealand after the islands were displayed in the Lord of the Rings films, with about 20 per cent looking to go on a city break as showcased in Lost in Translation.

The study also revealed that if money was no object for their holiday choice 56 per cent of British tourists would choose to go on a five-star luxury break in the Caribbean.

Earlier this week, research by AXA Travel Insurance indicated the average holidaymaker has gone to seven different countries.

However, 300,000 "mega travellers" were reported to have traveled to over 50 countries, reports Travel Weekly.
