The Caribbean remains a top destination among cruise insurance customers, according to the results of a new survey.

A study by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), consumer interest in cruisers remains strong, with 55 per cent of holidaymakers who have never taken a cruise planning to do so in the next three years.

However, cheaper deals on Caribbean cruises are continuing the region's stranglehold on the cruising industry - despite tough financial times, the association stated.

Industry expert Carolyn Spencer Brown told CNN: "With the Caribbean, one of the biggest advantages is there's simply more choice and it's a much more flexible option.

"During times of the year when there's more variety, pricing will be more competitive as well."

Recently, a report by the CLIA found that the cruise industry is "well positioned" for continued growth and success.
