Cancer sufferers 'have increased travel insurance costs'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Those who have suffered from cancer are facing increased travel insurance costs, it has been suggested.

According to figures released by Macmillan Cancer Support, about two out of five tourists who have been successfully cured of the disease have either had to pay more for travel insurance than non-cancer consumers or have been refused cover altogether.

The study also revealed that eight per cent of cancer patients have gone on holiday without any travel insurance cover.

Meanwhile, some six per cent of respondents, who were either in remission or had made a complete recovery, claim to have been refused travel insurance.

Head of campaigns and public affairs Ayesha Owusu-Barnaby said: "This can be very distressing when you're trying to buy insurance for a restful holiday or trip abroad to visit family."

As a result, the charity is looking to improve patients' access to cover by encouraging travel insurance firms to review their policies.

Last month, Richard Mason, director of insurance for moneysupermarket.com, advised consumers to be open about their medical circumstances, otherwise they risk making any claims on their travel insurance policy invalid.

However, travellers will be glad to know that Go Travel Insurance offers a range of comprehensive travel insurance policies for holidaymakers with a variety of pre-existing medical conditions and special needs.
