Speaking yesterday (October 15th), Ignacio Vasallo, director of the Spanish Tourist Office, said the Canary Islands set the precedent for other countries, where levels of service and infrastructure were concerned, adding that the islands had always been at the forefront of tourism.

"With warm weather all year round, and a reputation for a similarly warm welcome, the Canary Islands continue to offer great value for money for families, friends, couples and solo travellers seeking an authentic Spanish experience," he commented.

Mr Vasallo described the islands, with their unique volcanic landscape, as rich in natural beauty and unspoiled, adding that more and more travellers were beginning to discover the "magical allure" of the Canaries.

In related news, a recent survey by Abbey revealed that almost eight million Britons are preparing to jet off to European beach holiday destinations this winter.
