Taking your family away on a camping holiday has never been easier, according to travel group Blacks Leisure.

Matt Bekavac, a spokesman for the company, said camping holidays are soaring in popularity and offer families excellent value for money.

"Going camping is more or less a one off cost, as buying quality equipment will last for years. Also, camping eliminates the expense of flights and hotels. You can enjoy a family camping holiday from £50," he explained.

Mr Bekavac said Britons had also been attracted by the new technology available, such as anti-bacterial tents and canvas which protects against UV rays and mosquitoes.

"The backing of designers, such as Celia Birtwell, has also made camping more fashionable and there is also a greater awareness around carbon footprint and looking after our environment," he added.

Research carried out by Barclays Bank last year revealed that Britons spend around £1 billion annually on camping and caravanning holidays.
