Forget tropical holidays, camping is back in fashion - with bookings up by around 15 per cent on last year, according to Canvas Holidays.

This recent surge in popularity could be down to the credit crunch; however, Jonathan Knight, editor of the Camping Cool guidebook series, said Britons have been hit by the festival bug and the desire to "escape the rat race".

"I think one of the reasons [camping has become so popular] is the fact that the equipment is now so much better than it used to be – the tents are quite waterproof, you can have a comfortable night's sleep on an air mattress and you can take all the luxury you want with you camping," he commented.

Luxury campsites have also been developed, with Brits now able to holiday in tepees and state-of-the-art camping pods, which, according to Mr Knight has "introduced the concept of camping to a far wider audience".

A study by Barclays Bank last year revealed that Britons spend around £1 billion annually on camping and caravanning.
