Cairo has long been a favourite with holidaymakers wanting to discover the Pyramids of Giza, and offers a host of cultural attractions besides.

The Old Cairo and Islamic Cairo areas will keep you entertained for hours as you navigate the narrow streets and discover the hidden mosques, churches, museums and souks.

The main market is the Khan al-Khalili, where you'll find yourself haggling for silk and spices and the many outdoor cafes provide the perfect place to rest weary legs and do a spot of people-watching.

If you want a terrific panorama of the city, head to the Citadel – home to Egypt's rulers for 700 years.

Perhaps the biggest draw in Cairo itself is the Egyptian Museum – which houses the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts in the world. With more than 130,000 items on display, it could take you some time to work your way around. Highlights include the legendary tomb of Pharoah Tutankhamun.

However, the top attraction here is undoubtedly Giza and its pyramids, located around 20 kilometres to the south of Cairo.

Included as one of the original Seven Wonders of the World (and the only one still in existence), Giza and its pyramids are thought to be the most popular tourist destination ever.
