European holidays may soon be a thing of the past, as "aspirational" Britons shun trips to Spain and France in favour of long-haul journeys, it has been suggested.

A recent survey by Cater Allen Private Bank revealed that 63 per cent of Brits planned to travel outside of Europe this year, with 26 per cent claiming they are eager to holiday "off the beaten track".

Popular destinations for those going long-haul include Australia, North America, Asia and Africa.

Of those polled, 22 per cent said they wanted to experience a mountain climb, while ten per cent of people said they would like to take an African safari.

Sally Ann Watts, head of marketing at Cater Allen, said: "This research shows that Britons are moving away from traditional holidays and becoming aspirational in their holiday choices.

"But the move to long haul, adventure style holidays can lead to potentially higher costs such as fuel surcharges and other additional costs."

In other travel news, Britons were earlier this week warned to buy travel insurance before going abroad.

The warning came from Sainsbury's Bank, after a study revealed that one-in-four Brits planned to travel abroad this summer without travel insurance.
