Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

About two million Britons are set to travel abroad over this bank holiday weekend, it has been revealed.

Research by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) indicates some 1.9 million tourists will go away as the country prepares for a long weekend.

Abta president Justin Fleming said: "May is one of the nicest times of year to travel with cheaper prices and bearable temperatures, but bank holidays are always busy, so check the travel news for your destination."

The rise in tourist numbers was also attributed to the upcoming school half-term holiday.

Spain, Greece, Italy and the Canary Islands were reported to be particularly popular with travellers.

Meanwhile, Florida was indicated as a hotspot for long-haul tourists, with Paris and Prague said to be two of the most popular city break destinations.

Earlier this month, a study conducted by Mintel revealed that British tourists are spending more money while abroad.

Overall expenditure while on foreign holidays was reported to have increased by 28 per cent to £23.8 billion between 2002 and 2006.
