Sales of Turkish currency have reportedly 'gone through the roof', as British holidaymakers shun the eurozone and head to cheaper climes.

Figures released by M&S Money revealed that sales of Turkish Lira are up by 53 per cent on last year, with the Lira being named as 2008's second most popular exotic currency.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents, Turkey bookings have increased by 20 per cent over the last year, with more and more holidaymakers choosing to travel outside of the eurozone for currency reasons.

Commenting on the findings, Fraser Miller, M&S head of travel services, said: "The huge increase in sales of Turkish currency is not surprising, with the relative power of the euro against the pound meaning Brits are getting more for their money by opting for destinations like Turkey.

"This trend is confirmed by the fact that there has also been a large increase in sales of Egyptian currency this year."

Some of Turkey's most popular resorts include Bodrum, Antalya and Igdir.
The country is also famed for its ancient ruins, which include the Library of Celsus and the Roman ruins of Ephesus.
