Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

The majority of Britons do not have insurance for their pets, a new study reveals.

Research released by Debenhams Personal Finance suggest that some three quarters of consumers do not get insurance cover for their animals, leaving them at risk should their prized pet suddenly become ill or is stolen.

Diane Jackson, head of the firm, said: "Pets are family members too. We insure our valuable possessions, we should be insuring our pets as well."

The study also indicated that the Metropolitan Police has seen a 74 per cent increase in pet theft in London over the past year.

Last month, Halifax advised holidaymakers wishing to take their animals away with them on holiday to take out travel insurance for their pets as well as themselves.

However, with the documentation process for a 'pet passport', which sees animals be vaccinated and microchipped for identification purposes, taking up to six months to complete, holidaymakers were recommended to act quickly to be able to get away in time for the summer holidays.

The study revealed that in a similar way travel insurance is catered towards human holidaymakers, taking out pet insurance for animals can help cover medical costs in case of an emergency.

As is also the case with travel insurance, the amount of cover the pet can receive is reflected in the policy taken out by the owner.
