British holidaymakers are shunning beach holidays in favour of active breaks, it has been suggested.

According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), holidaymakers are becoming more eager to engage in healthy activities, as opposed to relaxing on the beach.

AITO spokesman Ian Bradley said: "They want to feel like they are maybe learning a new skill or they are working out where they are and seeing wonderful places around the world."

Mr Bradley suggested that Britons are also becoming increasingly concerned about obesity and are beginning to change their lifestyles if an effort to stay active.

He maintains that people are also attracted to the length of activity holidays.
"You don't have to take three weeks off to do an adventure holiday or an activity holiday you can do it pretty quickly as well, without taking too much time off work," he continued.

Research carried out by Mintel last year revealed that activity trips are expected to represent one in eight holidays by the end of 2008, with around 10.2 million activity breaks taken by Britons during 2007.
