Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

British holidaymakers are opting to downgrade their travel plans this year rather than axing them completely, it has been suggested.

James Freemantle, industry affairs manager at the Air Transport Users Council, said that many tour operators were reporting strong numbers, despite the current economic downturn, suggesting that Britons were downgrading their holidays as opposed to cancelling them.

"They [holidaymakers] are still going away, but downgrading from certain holidays to cheaper package holidays," he said.

Speaking last week, editor of Luxury travel Magazine Alyson Cook said that Britons viewed their holiday time as "sacrosanct" and pointed out that people would rather cut back in other areas than sacrifice their annual trip away.

However, a recent study by railwaytechnical.com suggested that many people are planning to take domestic holidays this year.

Figures revealed that over one-third of Britons planned to holiday in Blighty this year, with people said to be 'put off' the idea of foreign holidays by the threat of additional charges, lost luggage and check-in delays.
