Going back-packing? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Backpackers should aim to stick to a daily budget while on their travels and explore away from major cities in order to save money, an industry expert has claimed.

According to Lonely Planet, travellers who want to keep their spending down should go off the "beaten track" and avoid the major tourist destinations - where services are often more expensive.

The publisher's travel editor Tom Hall said that logging on to internet banking is a "god-send" for backpackers, as they can then keep up to date with their finances, which can become confusing with exchange rates.

Mr Hall added: "It's very careful budgeting. If you go away for three months and you over spend by five pounds per day then that's an extra £450 that you've spent."

Lonely Planet publishes travel guides in eight languages around the world.
