Going back-packing? – Get a great deal on travel insurance
The credit crunch is forcing an increasing number of young people to rethink their backpacking plans and budget more carefully.
A recent survey by social networking site Bebo revealed that while an increasing number of young people are planning a backpacking holiday, just 14 per cent intend to spend a full year abroad.
Instead, backpackers and gap year travellers are watching their finances and cutting back on the length of time they are away, the Press Association reports.
The average amount spent by backpackers currently stands at £4,000, with most expecting to travel for around six months.
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 29 per cent said they intended to travel alone, with popular destinations including Kenya, Venezuela, Colombia and Sri Lanka.
For backpackers who are on a tight budget, gap year specialists STA Travel recommends shopping around for the best deals on foreign currency and investing in a global sim card.
