Travellers who take backpacking holidays are prepared to spend more and splash out while they are on their travels in order to make sure that they get the full value of their experience, according to Lonely Planet.

Backpackers who are venturing across the world are not letting costs stand in the way of them trying bungee jumping or sky diving.

Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, commented: "People are recognising the value of saving up a little bit more before they go and one of the old adages of going on a big trip is: 'The more money that you have, the better time that you'll have.'"

Two out of three tourists impulsively indulged in bungee jumping without verifying that they were covered by their travel insurance according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
