Going back-packing? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

A gap year travel website is set to offer backpackers the ability to compare flight availability online, it has been revealed.

Under the move, Global Travel Market will allow gap year travellers to search for air travel services on gapyear.com.

Founder of gapyear.com Tom Griffiths said: "Travelling around the world on a gap year is all about designing your own itinerary according to your needs and dreams."

Mr Griffiths added that although backpackers account for one per cent of outbound travellers, due to the length of time they spend abroad they account for about a tenth of all overseas spend by British tourists.

Meanwhile, Global Travel Market chief executive Dave Simmons added that the service demonstrates gapyear.com's status as "market leaders launching ground-breaking products".

He also pointed out that the portal recently launched the first pre-paid Mastercard aimed at backpackers and has won an award for Best Youth Travel Website.

Last month, Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express, claimed taking out sufficient travel insurance is one of the most important things a gap year traveller should look to do.
