Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Around one in eight British motorists have claimed to have driven a car they are not insured with, new figures report.

According to a study by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, two thirds of these drivers have taken someone else's car out on the road, often belonging to a family member or friend.

Director of insurance Richard Mason said: "While most of these motorists may not consider themselves part of the uninsured driving problem […] it's important to realise anyone who drives without cover is breaking the law and poses a financial risk to themselves and other road users."

He added that those driving cars without insurance have been attributed as the main cause of policy cost rises over recent years.

The study also indicated that men are more likely to take to the road without insurance, with about 17 per cent of male drivers admitting the offence, compared to nine per cent of women.

However, despite numbers of uninsured drivers on the highways, moneysupermarket.com claimed motor insurance quotes fell by five per cent during 2006.

An earlier moneysupermarket.com study revealed about 12 per cent of winter sports resorts tourists take to the slopes without travel insurance.
