Arctic adventure in Norway

Going back-packing? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

The warmer summer months offer wildlife-lovers a great opportunity to visit the Arctic haven of Spitsbergen in Norway.

The largest of the islands in the Svalbard archipelago, Spitsbergen is only 600 miles from the North Pole and is home to the likes of polar bears, walruses, reindeer and Arctic foxes.

And bird-watchers will have plenty to keep them busy, since during the summer months the island sees thousands of our feathered friends take up residence. King Eider drakes, Little Auks, Ivory Gulls and Purple Sandpipers are all here to be seen.

In terms of getting around, hiking can be combined with boat trips and cruises, while kayaking offers the chance to get up closer to nature. If you are lucky, you may be able to book dog-sledding and snowmobile trips too, although these are usually winter activities.

Visitors can also enjoy endless sunshine – this far north, the sun hardly sets at all. Insomniacs beware, but photographers will have extra hours to snap away at all those fascinating creatures.
