Annual travel insurance 'may provide more effective cover'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Taking out an annual travel insurance policy could be a cost-effective option for families planning a summer holiday, it has been suggested.

According to MoneyExpert, annual cover can sometimes cost less than the price of a single trip travel insurance policy.

Chief executive Sean Gardener said: "Holidaymakers often think that single trip cover is simple and cheap, but the truth is it's often not best value for money."

However, Mr Gardener added that those holidaymakers who focus solely on the cost of travel insurance policies could be left a premium "that is not worth the price".

As a result he claimed that travellers should also consider the depth and quality of travel insurance available when looking to buy cover.

Meanwhile, as travel insurance policies are "only tested when you need to make a claim" consumers should carry out as much research as possible making sure they get the right cover for them.

Last week, Perry Wilson, director of InsureandGo, advised consumers to not pay "over the odds for travel insurance".

He claimed tourists should avoid travel insurance provided by tour operators and holiday agents as it is often needlessly expensive and provides insufficient cover and should instead consider a specialist broker such as Go Travel Insurance.
