Keeping You & Your Possessions Safe

Remember you are as much at a risk of being a victim of crime as you are at home, so you should always be on your guard and use your common sense at all times.

1. Check out the FCO’s website for the ‘Know Before You Go’ campaign and their Country Advice & Travelers Tips for the country you are visiting and do your homework in the readily available guide books before you go.

2. Keep your eye on your valuables at all times and use an out of sight wallet. Don’t carry or show off valuables that are unnecessary for your trip, leave items you don’t need in your hotel safe.

3. Take care when drinking in bars and clubs as ‘spiking drinks’ or date raping drugs are rife in many countries.

What to do if you are a victim of crime:
Report the crime to the local police and obtain a statement and reference number.  If necessary, contact the 24hr emergency assistance company for travel insurance purposes.

Passports & Visas

1. Make a note of your passport number, date and place of issue or take a photocopy and leave with a friend or relative.

2. Always ensure your passport is valid for a further 6 months from your return date.

3. Write the full details of your next of kin in the passport

4. Keep your passport in the safe provided at your hotel or keep it upon your person at all times.

5. In the event of your passport being lost or stolen overseas, report it to the local police immediately, obtain a statement and reference number.  Contact your nearest British Consulate Office to obtain advice.

5. Find out the entry requirements for the country you are visiting.  Their Embassy or High Commission will be able to tell you what British Nationals need.  Be sure to have the necessary visa and permits before you go.

Travel Money & Credit Cards

1. Make a note of your credit card details, plus the issuers contact telephone numbers.

2. Check your credit cards aren’t about to expire

3. Ensure your credit cards will be accepted in the countries you are traveling to.  Check the British Bankers Association website (www.bba.org.uk) for more tips on using your credit cards abroad

4. Make a note of your travellers cheque numbers and leave a copy with a relative or friend

5. To avoid fraud or cloning, never let your credit card leave your sight.  The waiter or shop assistant should always process any transactions in front of you.

6. Ensure you have enough money for your trip.  It is a good idea to take back up funds in travellers cheques, sterling or US dollars.

7. Immediately inform your bank or credit card issuers if your travellers cheques or credit cards have been lost or stolen.
