Association of British Travel Agents

The Association of British Travel Agents is the UK's Premier Trade Association for Tour Operators and Travel Agents. ABTA's 1039 tour operator and 6050 travel agency offices are responsible for the sale of some 85% of UK-sold holidays.

Formed in 1950, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has 1,900 Members. Between them, these Members have 7,000 outlets, sell over 90% of UK package holidays and have a combined annual turnover of more than £29 billion.

ABTA has both a regulatory and a trade association role. It maintains Codes of Conduct governing the relationship between Members and also between Members and their clients. ABTA’s financial protection schemes are well known to members of the public and the Association maintains a high profile with the media to ensure continued public awareness of ABTA and its role at the forefront of the travel industry. Eighty-eight per cent of the travelling public recognise the ABTA logo.

As the largest UK travel trade association, ABTA has continued to strengthen its role as the voice of the travel industry, and in representing its Members’ interests to government at both a national and a European level. With an ever-increasing volume of proposed legislation being imposed on the industry, particularly from Europe, ABTA also maintains a regular flow of information on these topics to Members.

ABTA has, over the years, developed and maintained strong links with travel industry principals in order to further the interests of Members. The Travel Industry Partner scheme is a natural development, extending the size of the ABTA family and further strengthening the industry’s voice.
